Professional Development: Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom

Hello,

The Ivy School is excited to host a professional development opportunity at our school in August 2024. The course is facilitated by Chip DeLorenzo and will run from 8:30-4:30 on August 29th & 30th. We would love for Montessorians in the Portland and Greater Oregon community to join us for this learning experience.

The 2-day Practitioner’s Class is based on the book, Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom, by Jane Nelsen and Chip DeLorenzo. The class uses a child study approach, designed to help participants learn how to implement respectful, effective, and time-tested methods of classroom management that reflect our deepest values as Montessori educators: mutual respect, cooperation, responsibility, empathy, and independence.

Using real classroom situations, new and veteran educators and administrators will learn how to:

  • Create a classroom community and social/emotional environment that will reduce misbehavior and foster normalization;

  • Create student support plans to help children with behavioral challenges;

  • Develop clear and consistent practices amongst the adults in their classrooms to meet behavioral challenges respectfully and effectively;

  • Understand the roots of misbehavior in children;

  • Empower children to be respectful, cooperative, and responsible members of the classroom community;

  • Help children find a sense of belonging and significance in their classroom community;

  • Effectively train assistants in classroom management;

  • Develop school-wide practices that will help parents as well as teachers.

Materials – Participants will receive a copy of the book, Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom, by Jane Nelsen and Chip DeLorenzo, and a workbook for the class.

Group Discounts – Please email Chip directly to register groups of 3 or more participants for a group discount quote: info@chipdelorenzo.com.

Montessori Program Start Up in Eastern Oregon

Greetings OMA and Community Members!  I am a former Montessori teacher (now school counselor) at a lower elementary school in Baker City, OR.  I am going to start a Montessori program at our school, as there are no elementary Montessori schools in Eastern Oregon.  I am piloting this program in an 8-9 year old summer school class, and am hoping to start a 6-9 class at the school the following school year.  I am working with a very small budget, and am asking for donations of materials to start this program.  I am willing to drive to all parts of the state to pick things up.  If anyone is closing a classroom or a school and needs a good home for materials, please consider donating items to Brooklyn Primary School in Baker City!
