Freqently Asked Questions About OMA

What is the Oregon Montessori Association?

The Oregon Montessori Association is a regional organization of Montessori teachers, administrators, parents, and community members who are committed to advancing the Montessori educational movement in Oregon. For 30 years we have been serving the needs of the Montessori community through networking opportunities, workshops, the Forza Vitale! newsletter, our annual Spring Tea, resource library, speakers bureau, and more.

Does the OMA certify Montessori schools?

The OMA does not endorse or certify Montessori schools. We are an umbrella organization that supports all efforts to make Montessori education available to our community.

Parents searching for Montessori schools should bear in mind that the Montessori name is not trademarked, so anyone can claim to run an authentic Montessori environment. See What to Lok for in a Montessori School for more information.

Does the OMA offer Montessori teacher training?

We do not offer teacher training, but there are two training centers in Portland and several in Washington. Training is offered in a variety of formats, and most reputable training centers are accredited by MACTE (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education).

MACTE was granted initial recognition by the Secretary of Education in 1995, and this reognition extends through the year 2013. Consistent with its recognition by the Secretary, MACTE identifies Montessori teacher education programs for the purpose of determining eligibility for student assistance (Title IV funding) and/or participation in other federal programs; and publishes lists of the institutions/programs which conform to MACTE standards and policies (from the MACTE website).

How do I become a member of the OMA?

Membership is open to both schools and indiviuals who are interested in supporting Montessori in our region. Join us online, or download a membership application and mail us a check. Our membership year runs from August 1 to July 31.
